On September 17, 2006, a crowd of about 2000 people gathered to hear the Dalai Lama speak for the first time at the Great Stupa at the Shambala Mountain Center in Red Feathers Lakes, Colorado. At the end of the event, everyone tied their white scarves, or khatas, together, and waited for the Buddhist leader to touch the main scarf to his heart, which they believe sends a blessing to everyone touching one of the scarves.
