(CRESTED BUTTE, Colorado. July 22, 2004) Adolph Ortiz, site manager for the Mt. Emmons water treatment facility looks into the affluent portal of an abandoned mine where polluted water is captured and treated before being released into Coal Creek, which runs through the town. The cost is in the millions each year for mining giant Phelps Dodge. Phelps Dodge recently purchased 500 acres of patented mining claims on the top of Mount Emmons, known by locals as the "Red Lady". The fear is that the mining company may mine the Red Lady and destroy the scenery and serenity of the town. ( Photo by DENNIS SCHROEDER/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
