(CRESTED BUTTE, Colorado. July 22, 2004 ) A signand gate to a water treatment facility treating the water from an abandoned mine on the base of Mount Emmons already blocks road access of to the top of the mountain. Mining giant Phelps Dodge recently purchased 500 acres of patented mining claims on the top of Mount Emmons, known by locals as the "Red Lady". The fear is that the mining company may mine the Red Lady and destroy the scenery and serenity of the town. Locals are also worried that foot access to the back country skiing on the giant bowls of the mountain may be closed. ( Photo by DENNIS SCHROEDER/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS)
