After her testmony, Julie MacKenzie (cq) weeps as she holds a picture of her son Tyler Ryan MacKenzie (cq) and his comforted by her mother Jenette Borland (cq) seated next to her. The Committee heard testimony from Julie MacKenzie, the mother of Pfc. Tyler Ryan MacKenzie, who was killed in Iraq last year. His funeral in Greeley last year was picketed by members of an extremist group from Topeka, Kansas. At the State Capitol, the House Judiciary Committee on April 6, 2006 heard the "Right to Rest in Peace Act," bill sponsored by State Representative Michael Merrifield, D-Manitou Springs. It protects the privacy of families and friends mourning their loved ones at their funerals. House Bill 1382 shields families from disruptive protests by creating a buffer-zone between the funeral site and the protestors for a period of time before and after a funeral service. Colorado is the 27th state in the nation to propose such legislation. (LINDA McCONNELL/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) *** Julie MacKenzie (cq) Jenette Borland (cq)
