Johnson & Wales University culinary student Kai Bednorg (cq), from Hawaii, with other students, serves up a vegan dish made by the university's alumni Chef Charlie Ayers (cq), former executive chef to the Grateful Dead (the band, not Jerry Garcia) and Google. He was on campus as a visiting chef to demonstrate and speak to students and the community. As the Google executive chef, Ayers ran the cafeteria for six years serving free breakfast, lunch and dinner to employees. By the time he left the company in 2005, Ayers oversaw a kitchen staff of 135. Ayers is currently a member of the Chef's Council of Chefs for Humanity, a grassroots coalition of chefs and culinary professionals guided by a mission to quickly be able to raise funds and provide resources for important emergency, education, and hunger-related initiatives throughout the world. Currently, Ayers is pursuing his own passion for an organic and fresh approach to cooking in his quest to open Calafia, an organic and fresh food restaurant in northern California, by 2007.
