DLM00158 Geography teacher Eric Hamlin was suspended with pay from his teaching job at Carmody Middle School Wed. Aug. 23, 2006 for refusing to take down from his classroom the flags of Mexico, China and the United Nations which were displayed along with the U.S. flag. Administrators for the school demanded Hamlin take down the flags citing a state statute regarding the display of foreign flags in government buildings. Hamlin said he refused because the flags are important teaching tools and that he disagrees with the law because it promotes a narrow minded view of the world and a lack of understanding of other cultures. He also said it might be different if he wasn't teaching geography, but because he is the flags have a legitimate reason for being there.(DARIN MCGREGOR/ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS) **Eric Hamlin (cq)
