Heit and his father were outraged upon learning that the killer of his best friend and brother could be eligible for parole under a new Department of Corrections program. He and his family had not even been notified that Dennis Prentiss, 54, was part of a new program called Lifelines. Prentiss shot Howard Chester Pilcher, 14, in the face multiple times. Prentiss was also convicted of murdered a 19-year-old woman, Pilcher said that Prentiss stabbed the woman 17 times in a motel with her baby nearby.
