h There was woman *s fearless eye , Lit by her deep love's truth; There was manhood's brow serenely high, And the fiery heart of youth. What sought they thus afar? Bright jewels of the mine? Ehe wealth of Bead, the spoils of war? $hey sought a fiath's pure shrine. Ay, call it holy ground, The soil where first they trod. They hive left unstained what there they found— Freedom to worship God. rirl Puritan — That was a dreadful winter.. In t wo or three months1 time ha^f of our company died, especially in January and February, being ttae depth of winter, and wanting houses and other conforts, being infected w ith the scurvy and other diseases, which this long voyage had brought upon us so that of 100 and odd persons, scarce 50 remained. Ill this while the Indians came skulking about us.. Boy—You must have had a tough time.T Didn't life ever become any easier? Girl**-Yes, all the next summer there was no want. And now began to aorae in sotre of fowl, as winter approached, besides water fowl thare was great store of wild turkeys, besides venison. We had abcut a peck of meal a week to a person, since harvest, and Indian, earn. We were so grateful that we set aside three days for fa«H3»- ing and thanksgiving and invited our friends the Indians. Boy--What did you do to have fun? Girl—We had to struggle so hard for a living we didn't have time for fun. Xii Curtain Boy reading a,gain :^- (By 1750 there were one million English in America, but the English king still tried to rule over these people in America. The English soldiers were sent over to wage war on the colonists. The battle of Lexington and Concord was the first battle of the wur. Boy--"Clear as mud •'-- (Curtain pulled) On stage is Redcoat-- My company shall march on Lexington and ^oncord today to arrest Hancock and Adams and to seize the bullets, powder, and guns the- farmers have stored away. If we don't get them today, we'll get them later, thru the back, maybe. Minuteman enter a-- "We have a feeling in our bones that the British are coming out into our peaceful countryside tomorrow* . We'll be ready any minute for them though. Our good friend,,Paul Revere, will wait on the banks of the Charles River to watch for the signal light in the church across the river in Boston. He said to his friend: "If the British march By land or sea from the town tonight, Hang a lantern aloft in the belfry arch Of the North Church tower, as a signal light. One if by land, and two if by sea; And I on the opposite shore will be Ready to ride and spread the alarm Through every Middlesex village and farm For the country-folk to be up and to arm" Then he said, "Good night ,-'* and witij muffled oar Silently rowed to the Char les town shore.
