Julian Martinez of the San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico steps out of a ceremonial cave among the ruins of Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. The wood ladder has tall sidepieces that extend several feet past the rungs. A man is crouched down in the background digging in front of a large opening. Other portions of the ancient cliff dwelling lie under the huge rock overhang and in the side of the cliff behind Julian.
