Summary
Men from the Tenth Mountain Division, 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment, Company K, dig in on a ridge north of Sassomolare. According to the caption, they are protecting the left flank of the main column moving up the Porretta-Moderna Highway, a few yards below them. Most of the men lie close to the ground against the shelter of a slope or fence higher than themselves, like a fence. One man is still digging a shallow trench with a shovel. In the background farm buildings fill valley between low mountains.
