An oral Statement Before the City Council of Denver, Colorado
Public Hearing on Auraria Urban Renewal,. September 29, 1969
The reasons for selection of the Auraria site for a center-
city, three college complex has been presented by the previous
speakers.  The selection of the site was made after careful study
by the Denver Planning Office and the Downtown Master Plan Committee, working with representatives from Metropolitan State College,
Denver Community College, Colorado  University Denver Center, and
the State Commission on Higher Education.  The Denver Urban Renewal
Authority was asked to seek approval of the Denver City Council to
designate the area as an urban renewal project for survey and planning purposes.  City Council so designated the area in May, 19 69.
As authorized by Council, DURA applied for■the funds from the United
States Department of Housing and Urban Development.
On February 18, 19 69 the Secretary of the Department of Housing
and Urban Development (HUD) .notified the Mayor of Denver and the Denver
Urban Renewal Authority that his agency recognized the total efforts
being made by Denver in its many programs for physical and social
betterment and that HUD would make funds available for an urban renewal project in the Auraria site.  This commitment was supported by
an immediate funding of $380,000 for survey and planning and an
additional amount of $12,254,806 for a Capital Grant reservation
