The U.S. Transport Grant
arrived in port early this morning with
Major Gen. Lawton [Major General] and the 17th Inf [Infantry] and
one batallion of the 4th Inf. after a voyage
of 52 days from New York. Since leaving
Port said they have come with all possible
speed, at that point they first heard of
the out break of the insurection.
After landing Gen. Lawton paid
his compliments to Maj Gen Otis, after a
content consultation of two hours or more
General Lawton started for the firing line
and intends on seeing all of it before
concluding on what way we will advance.
one batallion of the 17th & 14th relieved
the two batallions of the 2nd Oregon Vol [Volunteer]
of police duty in the Walled City. The
Oregons will go on the line tomorrow where
