Dear Sir
Yours of Jany [January]-1-99 at hand some
days ago. Also recieved New Year Edition of
the Republican, please except my best, for
it was a rare treat, in this out of the way
corner of the earths surface.
I have delayed answering your letter
on account of my numerous duties caused
by the insurection that is it at its height
at the present time. Since my last letter
we have had quite a little trouble around
our trenches, which measure at the present time
27 miles around the city and four full
Regiments patrolling the streets with from two
to four companies from the Regiments on the
line assisting them. Since my last letter
there has been about 10 Americans Killed and
25 wounded. our orders from General Otis
is to act in the defensive only, until reinf-
