r frtfH TOPS IN VALUES TOPS IN NEWS Vol. 1, No. 7 THE HILLTOPPER May 21, 1954 Page 1 WAKE UP NEIGHBORS! Almost two hundred years ago Paul Revere made his famous ride through the New England country side shouting, "Wake up the British are coming". Today I shout Wake Up Neighbors. Following Paul Revere's warning, the early settlers picked up their muskets and went out to fight a war that led to our independence. Today let each of us pick up our pens and circle May the 26th on our calendars. That is the day that each property owner has a chance to find out first hand what the new proposed zoning changes mean to us. The first public meeting will be held at Manuel Training High School May 26th at 7:30 P.M. Last Wednesday Mr. George Nez, Assistant Planning Director talked before the monthly luncheon meeting of the Real Estate Board. From the trend of his first comments on the proposed zoning changes, the planning board is taking a very firm stand that the changes are best regardless of what different communities want, or how it affects the value of our property, we are to go meekly along with the idea. Nov/ my idea of a democracy is that we all have a voice in our own government. How many of the property owners in this neighborhood have been asked for their desires in this matter? There has been a large group of citizens working on this new zoning change and—maybe this new change is the best they could think up—but why go to the trouble to change something that has been satisfactory to all of us since 1925 when this neighborhood was first zoned. Maybe they were not influenced by Big Money, but neither did they think of all the small property owners along Seventeenth, Eighteenth, Twentieth, or Thirteenth Avenues, who have bought property or held on to property for one reason, that it was in a commercial zone. Is it right that one man or a group of men can meet at the City Hall and with a few strokes of a pen wipe out half the valuation of the property in the neighborhood ? That is just what can happen if each one of us do not get out of our easy chair and forget about that favorite TV program or book or what ever we do at 7:30 on Wednesday evenings, and get ourselves up to Manuel Training High School on May the 26th. Lets Co-operate The other day I was in one of our neighborhood stores when a young man came in looking for a pair of sox. He was very sorry to bother but he had been downtown and had bought everything he needed but forgot the sox. In conversation with the merchant I learned that is quite a common situation. Now don't you think that is kind of a left handed approach to a shopping problem. Wouldn't it be simpler to shop in the neighborhood for the things you need, and then go downtown only if you can't find them. Did you ever stop to think, how inconvenient it would be if you HAD to go downtown for every little purchase you now make in the neighboroood. If there was no grocery around the corner that you could send the youngster to, for a loaf of bread or a quart of milk that you forgot when doing your shopping, no drug store in the neighborhood to pick up razor blades or cigarettes. If that were the case we would really walk a mile for a Camel. Now these neighborhood merchants are in business as much for you as for themselves so if you don't take advantage of their services you both lose. Another New Neighbor I have always said that in this business I don't make much money but I meet the nicest people, and this week has been no exception. Today I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. H. J. Barrows, of 1630 Ogden. Mr. Barrows a former furniture maker is now engaged in making miniature overstuffed furniture. These pieces serve as pin cushions and under the hinged seat is a space for the sewing kit. They are also used for doll furniture or pieces for the whatnot shelf. Since starting this as a hobby he now has pieces in 25 states. If you are looking for an unusual gift contact Mr. Barrows.
