A PUBLICATION BY CAPITOL HILL UNITED NEIGHBORHOODS 1290 WILLIAMS DENVER, COLORADO 80218 PHONEi 388-2716 THE URBAN DWELLED June so Aging and Downtown Provide Focus for General Meeting CHUN's next general meeting, on Thursday, June 26, will offer a double feature. The first part, from 6t30 to 7i^5 P«m. will be a community forum on aging. After a refreshment break, the second part will continue the discussion begun at April's general meeting, "Downtown Denver. Good Neighbor or Nemesis?" The meeting will be held at the Community Center Annex, 1290 Williams. At the April general meeting, a wide range of issues concerning downtown and its relation to Capitol Hill were identified. Those included traffic into downtown, the plight of low-income residents, downtown encroachment on our neighborhood and attracting people to downtown. June's meeting will pull those concerns together into a draft CHUN policy statement on downtown, to be voted on at a future meeting. The community forum on aging, one of some 300 meetings throughout the state, is the first step toward looking at the needs and assets of older persons, in preparation for the 1980 Governor's Conference on Aging and the 3rd Decennial White House Conference on Aging in 1981. Leading the discussion will be Capitol Hill's own champion of elders and long-time CHUN member, Ethlyn Christensen and Jan Moore- Kirkland, coordinator of the Governor's Conference and CHUN Vice-President for Membership. Capitol Hill has long had the highest concentration of over-65 residents inDenver. At the June 26 meeting, we will see how far the neighborhood's seniors have come since the last thorough study of their situation, done in 1967. Additionally, new challenges for CHUN in this important area may be identified. If you cannot attend the meeting but would like your opinions to be included, call Jan Moore-Kirkland (839-3671) for a brief questionaire. New Image Recommended for CHUN Communications An ad hoc communications committee met on June 5 at Joyce and Bill Thome's home. The group reviewed our current communications situation and will make several recommendations to the CHUN board. As we have discontinued our prior arrangement of having our newsletter published in Life on Capitol Hill, we are challenged with the task of publishing the newsletter ourselves with greatly increased publication costs.. First, the group set forth what it believes to be the purposes of a CHUN newsletter1 1) to reach members, particularly inactive ones cont. p. 5
