retreat

The sometime-scattered efforts of Capitol Hill's varied
community organizations and free-lancing activists started
to come together at the first Capitol Hill retreat, sponsored
by the Capitol Hill Coordinating Committee for Community
Services and held near Morrison the weekend of Oct. 11-13.
About twenty people took part at one time or another, representing such groups and agencies as CHUN, North Capitol Hill
Council, the Coordinating Committee, Denver Free University,
New Denver Community Association, Capitol Hill Gopher Service,
Denver Planning Office, and others.
A planning committee composed of John Hand, Warren Bailey,
John Marinace and Bernie Jones led the group through a series
of sessions designed to 1) find out who is who and who is doing
what 2) what are the existing conditions in Capitol Hill 3)
What are are dreams about what the neighborhood should be; and
4) what are some practical steps that could be taken right
away.  While a fuller report on the retreat will have to uait
until the next edition of the newsletter, some of the specific
actions planned for implementation after the retreat are listed

—designation of ajti informal gathering place (Scjui^e Lounge and
Restaurant at 'WiU'l^nas and Colfax for lunch, Fridays at noon)
—agreement to utilize CHUN newsletter more widely as a general
organ for communication in Capitol Hill.
—suggestion that CHUN sponsor some kind of forum where potential
Capitol Hill council candidates could air their views,
--scheduling of discussions about formation of a housing development
corporation to buy and restore old endangered houses,
--plans for Gilpin House staff to take message of boarding home
problems to neighborhood organizations,
—start discussions about planning a prototype block (e.g.
closing street, neighborhood gardens, greater use of alleys,
etc. )
—attempting to designate a block worker on each block of the
neighborhood as a general communications network for all area
organizations,
--agreement to urge all area organizations to sponsor and
participate in a similar retreat in the spring as a beginning
of inter-organizational long-term planning.
Any of the retreat planners (and probably anyone else who
attended) would be glad to elaborate on these discussions should
anyone wish more information.
Congratulations to Barbara
Sudler, a CHUN board member who
has recently been selected as
executive director of Historic
Denver, Inc. She replaces Ken
Watson who resigned a few months
ago.
Preservation is not new to
Mrs. Sudler.  She was very active
in saving the Tramway Cable Car
Co, and in obtaining Landmark
Status for the building.  Mrs,
Sudler brings wide and varied ~
experience to the job.  She has
been in charge of marketing and
public relations for her husband
Jim's architectural firm.  Volunteer jobs include work for the
Denver Art Museum, Denver Symphony,
various political campaigns,
Denver Public-Library researf n
and participation on the Gov ^nor's
Commission on Drugs and Alec ol
Abuse.
Before she was elected to bhe
CHUN board, she worked witl the
committee on Home Finance .md
helped plan our Banker's Tour,
Mrs, Sudler is very anxious
to broaden the base of Historic
Denver and believes strongly
that preservation is for ALL
the people.  An expanded membership would certainly give the
organization's ideals and goals
more influence.
We congratulate Mrs, Sudler-
and hope CHUN and Historic
Denver can continue to work
together on areas of mutual
concern.  We are very happy
that Mrs, Sudler has decided
to continue her service on the
CHUN board.
