CKUN Board of delegates Meeting
Capitol Hill Community Center
April 19, 1979
The meeting was called to order by Dan Paulien at 7:30 p.m. loard
members present were Gordon Appell, Lynne Arena, Mel Carter, Dene
Clark, Kay Fisher, Jim hill, Sarah Hite, Bernie Jones, Gerri Lane,
John Ozello, Tom Potter, Leon Sanders, Joyce Thorn, Ken Freed, and
Norma Oldham. Others present were Don Prohaska, Ted Koyer, Joanne
Hill, Nancy Rettig, Ben Brady, Sharon Kill, Sally Kurtzman, Liz
Jones, Jock McNulty, Ed Tilton, Lynn Adams.
The minutes of the March 22 meeting were approved as mailed.
School Closings. The Denver Board of Education voted 5-2 to close
four out of 10 schools recommended for closure, two in Capitol Hill
(Ellsworth and Emerson). In a very positive move, the Board is
assigning Emerson School childrennorth of Colfax to Wyman and Ebert,
those residing south of Colfax to Moore and perhaps Stevens. Ellsworth children will walk to Bromwell. The Board will look at multiple uses of schools and has stated there will be no more schools
evaluated for closing until 1982. Supt. Brzeihski has indicated he
wants to replace old schools with new.
Dan circulated a letter stating in essence that we think the Board
did a good thing, but questioning whether the Administration agrees
with the Board. Dan will send the letter tomorrow, and it will also
be read at the CKUN Annual Meeting.
National Neighbors. Bill Bridges from Greater Park Hill Community
made a presentation. His group will host the 10th annual conference
of National Neighbors June 14-17 at Colorado Women's College. Sara
Brown will deliver the keynote speech. Workshop topics include "Is
Social Classism Replacing Racism?11, "Busing Can Improve Academic
Achievement", "Reinvestment in the Inner City", and grantsmanship.
He encouraged CHUN's membership and participation. Ken Freed moved
that CHUN join National Neighbors for a fee of &25. The motion was
seconded and passed.
Gary Mitchell, Candidate for Mayor, spoke briefly.
Annual Meeting.will be Thursday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Botanic
Gardens. The program will consist of presentations by Denver School
Board candidates. Dan will give a brief CHUN Annual Report and asked
for reports from committee chairmen to be submitted to him. Election
of the new CHUN Board will occur.
People's Fair. Nancy Rettig showed the delightful 1979 poster designed
by Cathi Hartman and asked that we distribute them. Nancy needs leads
on an electrician. Deadline for exhibitors is tomorrow. There have
been 300 requests. 175 volunteers are committed to help. Life on
Capitol Hill will print the Fair guides. The next fair meeting is
scheduled April 30; Kay 2 - Chairmen's meeting; May 5 - 8:00 a.m. -
12:00 noon - training session at East; May 9 - General Meeting;
May 12 & 13 - Fair. Nancy explained that the financial situation may
not be as favorable as last year's.
Treasurer's Report. Dene Clark reported a balance in CHUN checking
